synopsis

English

1. Homo Academicus (50 mins x 4 episodes)

Could you study more than 12 hours a day for 3 years? No? Many students in Asia do! Four Harvard University students travel to Korea, Japan, China, India and Israel to discover Asian study habits and their influence on the community. Asian and Western study habits are evolving as a result of rising global competition. Learn more about the differences between East and West and how traditions have changed in this documentary series.

Civilizations so far have put a lot of time and effort into education in order to create a better future. However, the methods and aims of education differ in every culture, contributing the form of civilization with different characteristics.

Four students from Harvard, the icon of intelligence, are on a quest of “the learning,” figuring out the difference of education in each country and its outcomes.

Their observation includes Korea’s “education fever,” frequently referred in President Obama’s speeches, Chinese students who study 24-hour per day, and Jewish students who learn by debate and conversation. In the end, they agree to a conclusion: different civilization creates difference in “learning.”

Both in a thoughtful and humorous tone, Homo Academicus searches the secret of learning, which has given a birth to today’s civilizations.
