Gwanggaeto the Great was the Korean ruler who created the largest empire ever for Korea, used the first and independent “era name” for a king’s reign for a Korean kingdom, and scored countless victories in wars of conquest in creating the empire.

Gwanggaeto the Great was a legendary king who catapulted Goguryeo to become the center of the Asian continent in the east, among the powerful kingdoms vying for power in the region. <Gwanggaeto, The Great Conqueror> depicts his life as the 19th king of Goguryeo, as well as his passion and struggle in his pursuit to conquer the continent.

Damduk (played by Lee Tae-gon)
He is the second eldest son of King Gogukyang of kingdom Goguryeo, and later becomes Gwanggaeto the Great.
Since he wasn’t born as the eldest son, he decides - as early as when he was a child - to become a courageous general defending the borders of Goguryeo. If there was a dream of his, it was to become the great general of Goguryeo, supporting his elder brother who would ascend to the throne in future. Although Damduk is a prince, he considers himself more as one of the ordinary generals rather than having a sense of entitlement and privilege. Due to such mindset, in battles, he always leads from the very front and is the last to withdraw. Thus, he earns trust from soldiers and people of Goguryeo. But because of this, he starts to having enemies not only from countries around Goguryeo but from within Goguryeo itself…

Go Woon (played by Kim Seung-su)
He is the son of Gae Yeon-su, a Goguryeo statesman. To broaden his horizons and deepen insights in understanding the world, he has, from his early years, been wandering the continent. Although not as a military general defending the borders of Goguryeo, he has a sense of mission to do great deeds for the country. He was Damduk’s close friends since they were young but in future years, he becomes an enemy of his.

Mo Yong-bo (played by Lim Ho)
He is a son and crown prince of Mo Yong-su, the emperor of Hau Yen. He is competitive and fiery disposition. He grows leaps and bounds with his aggressiveness and clever ploys but runs into a “barrier” in the form of Damduk. When he finds out Damduk isn’t just another Goguryeo general but its prince, his character becomes more and more twisted due to his competitive attitude against Damduk.

谈德 (李泰坤)
高句丽故国壤王的二儿子，也就是日后的广开土大王。
他不是君主的长子，而且从小就立志成为一位保家卫国的将军，保卫高句丽的边疆。他梦想成为一位大将军，并在将来辅佐自己即将登上王位的兄长，将高句丽建设成为一个强盛的帝国。他虽然出身皇族，是一位王子，但是并没有产生一种优越的特权意识，而是以一个平凡的将领自居。基于这样一种思想，在战场上冲锋陷阵的时候，他总是一马当先，冲在最前线。因此深受士兵和百姓们衷心的爱戴和信赖。但是也因此使得他树敌众多，不仅是其他国家，就连高句丽内部的一些人也对他产生了猜忌。

高云 (金承洙)
国相开研洙的儿子。为了能开阔眼界，了解大千世界，他很早就游走在中原各地生活。虽然并不是作为一位将领保卫边疆，但是他具备远大的眼光和超人的洞察能力，因而肩负着一种振兴高句丽的强烈的使命感。从小他和谈德就是惺惺相惜的好友，但是以后却站到了谈德的敌对阵营，并与其针锋相对。

慕容宝（林豪）
后燕皇帝慕容垂的儿子，也是后燕国的皇太子，具有强烈的竞争意识，有着一颗不服输的心。他性格鲁莽，这与其皇太子的身份格格不入，但是却又善于运用策略，因而一路走来可谓一帆风顺，直到在他的面前出现了“谈德”这面不可逾越之壁。此后，他了解到谈德并不是一名普通的将军，而是高句丽的一位王子，想要与谈德一较长短的心理使他的心灵逐渐扭曲。

広開土太王（クァンゲトテワン）は朝鮮半島の歴史上、最も広い領土の大帝国を建設し、この地で最初に独自の年号を使い、数多くの征服戦争を勝利に導いてきた人物である。

＜広開土太王＞は高句麗の第１９代目の王様であり、中原の列強の間で高句麗を一気に大陸の中心に引き上げた立志伝的な王様で、中原制覇のための熱望と闘いを描いたドラマである。

タムドク（イ・テゴン）
高句麗の故國壤王(コグクヤンワン)の次男。のちの広開土太王。
長男として生まれなかったゆえ、幼いごろから高句麗の辺境を守る勇猛な将帥の道を歩んでいこうと決心する。彼の夢は将来、王位に上がる御兄さんを補佐し、強い高句麗を作り上げる大将軍になること。王子の身分でありながら、その特権意識よりは自ら平凡な将帥のように行動する、心得が大きい。このゆえに戦場に出る時は誰より先頭に立ち、最後に後退するのである。これにより兵士達だけではなく民たちからも深い信頼を得ている。しかしそういう行動のため他の国だけでなく高句麗の内部でも彼を嫉む人々が現れるのに。。。

コウン（キム・スンス）
国相のケヨンスの息子。世界を見る眼目を育てるために早くから中原を漂いながら生きてきた。将帥として辺境を守ることではないが自分の眼目と感覚で高句麗のために大きい仕事をしなきゃという使命感を持っている。タムドクとは幼いごろから心を打ち明ける友達の仲だったが後日、タムドクと敵として相手にすることになる。

モ・ヨンボ（イム・ホ）
後燕の皇帝の慕容垂(モ・ヨンス)の息子で皇太子である。競争心が強く激しい性格の持ち主である。皇太子らしくない猪突猛進的な性格と計略で止まる事を知らなかった彼の前にタムドクという相手が現われる。以後タムドクがただの将帥ではなく高句麗の王子という事を分かり、タムドクに対する競争意識がますます狂っていく。
