“The Great Merchant” is a drama based on a true story of a woman who lived in Jeju Island in Joseon Dynasty. She was reborn as a great merchant by improving her life of gisaeng from the bottom of the society, and she practiced the life of aid and sharing by providing the people suffered from hunger in years of famine with food.

Kim Man-deok made herself a great merchant with a strong will and efforts even under the feudal system of Joseon Dynasty when the idea that men are superior to women was widespread. She is also a real person who made a big change to the world with a broader mind than any other heroic men had.

Although she was doomed to be dashed to the road and suffered from a tough and difficult life in her childhood, she changed her destiny from a beggar to a gisaeng, from a gisaeng to a great merchant, and even from a great merchant to the most respected woman in Joseon.

However, she becomes so vulnerable and tender in the face of love. Man-deok runs away from the Gisaeng House under cover of night in order to keep ties with her lover, Jeong Hong-soo. She ends up being caught and is put into prison, and finally she is expelled to the transitory wards for epidemics. Here, Man-deok turns into a pharmacist while taking care of patients dying because of no money to buy drugs.

Afterwards, taking her friend’s death into an opportunity to be a merchant, Man-deok starts a new life as a merchant. She decides to restore falling-down East Gate Commission Agency and rebuild business ethics in lawless Jeju Island. Newly-rising East Gate Commission Agency that was once very powerless starts to stir up West Gate Commission Agency, the best agency in Jeju Island. Meanwhile, the actual power in West Gate Commission Agency, Mun-seon, who used to be a rival as well as an old friend of Man-deok, feels a sense of inferiority and is obsessed about winning over Man-deok. Using Kang Yu-ji as a puppet, Mun-seon happens to compete with Man-deok at the risk of her life…

金万德是一个出身低微的青楼女子,却依靠自己惊人的经商天赋成为了朝鲜历史上的一代女性巨商。她还是一位捐献自己的全部财产来救恤深受旱灾的济州岛民众的历史人物，是以身作则实现‘地位高则责任重’理念的伟大女性。

金万德是一位真实存在的历史人物。在朝鲜时代，由于受到封建体制的影响，存在着严重的重男轻女现象，在这种情况下，她以不让须眉的襟怀，凭借着自身的努力，成为了一代传奇巨商。

但是面对爱情，她又充满了无比的向往。金万德为了自己心爱的郑洪秀，从妓院里逃脱出来，但是却因此被捕入狱，并被转入了传染病医院。她在那里发现有很多人因买不起药而死亡，故而开始照顾患者，成为了一位懂得医术的妓女。

在朋友死后，她迈出了成为商人的第一步，决心要复兴东门客栈，想改变济州道混乱的局面。东门客栈的崛起，刺激了西门客栈的的实际主人-文善，从小她与万德就是亦敌亦友的关系，万德的成功使其感到无比的自卑，故而执著于与万德的竞争，并依靠姜有志的力量，与万德展开了激烈的较量。

‘巨商金万徳’は身分の低い妓女から自分の人生を開拓し、最高の商人に生まれかわって、凶年の飢饉に苦しむ済州島民に穀食を分け与え、ノブレス・オブリージュを実践した朝鮮時代の済州島の女性、金万徳の話を描いている。

金万徳、彼女は男尊女卑の思想が蔓延していた朝鮮時代の封建的な体制下で力強い意志と努力で巨商に生まれかわったし、どんな立派な男より大きい太っ腹で世の中を動かした歴史上の実存人物である。

幼いごろ、どん底に落ちて厳しい人生を暮さなければならない運命に生れついたが乞食から妓女に、妓女から巨商に、巨商から朝鮮最高の尊敬される恋人に、自分の運命を変えてきた力強い女性である。

しかし愛の前では限りなく弱い心を持った彼女である。万徳は大事なチョン・ホンスとの縁を守るために妓房から夜逃げをする。しかし結局、逮捕され、獄に閉じこめられて、伝染病隔離病棟に入れられる。ここで万徳はお金がなくて一回も薬を使わなく死んでいく患者たちの面倒をみながら薬屋の妓女に生まれかわる。

以後、友達の死をきっかけに商人としての人生を始めた万徳はつぶれていく東門客主(各地の商品を委託販売や仲買をしたり、それに倉庫業や貨物輸送業と金融業など多くの機能を兼ねる中間商人)を興して無法天地だった済州島に商道を立てることを心に決める。萎縮されていた東門客主の浮上は済州島の最高の客主である西門客主を刺激することになる。万徳の幼友達でライバルだった西門客主の実勢であるムンソンは万徳に対する劣等感で彼女との競争に執着する。ムンソンはカン・ユジを置物として先に立たせて万徳との命をかけた客主の競争をするようになるのに。。。
