This is a story of people who would have lived and loved like no other if that May had been the same as any other normal and sunny May. An emotional melodrama of passionate youths running toward their fate, unaware of the whirlwind of history that will be sweeping them. A man and a woman are caught in the mayhem of wails, blood, cries, and acrid smokes during May of 1980 in Gwangju, Korea. Losing their loved ones in front of their eyes and having to overcome constant crises of life and death, the two hardly get a chance to exchange their over-flowing love for each other.



- HWANG HUI-TAE/ Cast. LEE DOHYUN (Medical Student at Seoul National University)

“A little rebel by nature, who rejects all prejudgments made on him” Hui-tae’s life can be summarized into a “war against prejudice.”
To overcome the prejudice of being a son of a single mother, he entered Seoul National University Medical School at the top of his year. He would carry an acoustic guitar and visit music lounges on a regular basis because he hated being seen as a nerd. However, behind the veil, he would study hard to remain as a top student. That doesn’t mean he’s a venomous snake though. He’s neither obstinate nor malice. Rather, he’s shameless and enjoys watching people be taken aback by his unpredictable nerves. That’s how Hui-tae survives.



-KIM MYEONG-HUI/ Cast.GO MINSI (Third-Year Nurse)

“A righteous nurse, closer to a warrior in white than an angel in white”
Though she has a pretty face as if she could be someone’s first love, she left home barehanded to start a life in Gwangju. She’s already a nurse in her third year of practice. She goes by the name of Tough, Malicious, and Rock-Myeong-hui among colleagues. Six years ago, she was accused of leading the student movement and left home after she was pressured to drop out of school by her respected father. In order to save up to study in Germany, nurse Myeong-hui meets Hui-tae and through this absurd encounter, Myeong-hui feels liberated for the first time in her life. Hui-tae makes her laugh like a child. She feels reborn as someone else when she is with him.

Good looks and gentle personality. A typical old-fashioned “macho” who must protect and feed his woman. He is slowly captivated by Myeong-hui, who was once only a high school girl and a friend of his sister. However, she’s now a grown woman who not only supports her family but also pursues her dream to study abroad. Meanwhile, being discriminated against for coming from a weak country whilst studying abroad, Su-chan sought a “powerful country” over democracy. However, in mid-May, an unbelievable incident takes over the heart of his hometown. After witnessing his loved ones suffering for ridiculous reasons, Su-chan admits that his beliefs were wrong and begins to source supplies to citizens with the aid of his wealth and connections.



-LEE SU-RYEON/ Cast. KEUM SAEROK (Myeong-Hui's friend, The only dauter of a local worthy)

“Joan of Arc of the Department of Law at Chonnam University”
She was born into a wealthy family as an only daughter of a local worthy who’s been dominating Gwangju for generations, but she’s easy-going and enjoys having soju with raw ramen. Perhaps feeling indebted by her wealthy background, she takes the lead in the labor and democratic movements. Her father considers her to be immature and makes her go on a blind date in return for giving bail each time she is held on remand. Su-ryeon regrets sending Myeong-hui as a substitute when she realizes that “Mu-myeong”, an anonymous folk song composer whom she liked so dearly turns out to be the blind date partner..

如果那个五月只是像往常一样阳光明媚的五月，那将会是他们平凡地相爱下去的故事。 这部电视剧是讲述对即将来临的历史漩涡毫无预知，满怀热忱地奔向各自命运的年轻人们的人性爱情剧。一九八零年五月的光州，充满了痛哭和血腥、呐喊和硝烟，有一对男女被卷入这漩涡 之中。他们亲眼目睹了心爱的人们离去，时刻都要与生死抗争，连潮水般涌上来的恋情也无暇享受。

熙泰的人生，可以用一句话来概 括，那就是“与偏见斗争”。为了打破人 们对“未婚妈妈的儿子”的偏见，他以第一 名的成绩考入了首尔大学医学院。他想排 斥模范生的形象，背着一把吉他有事没事 就往音乐茶座跑，却会在没人注意的地方 拼命苦学，保持着医学院学霸的名誉。但 他又不是只有傲骨和狠毒的毒蛇一般性格， 相反，他更接近于没羞没躁的厚脸皮，经 常令他人不知所措，像个乐此不疲的滑头 小子。这就是熙泰的生存方式。

虽然外貌如同某个人朦胧的初 恋一般美好，但她却净身离家，来到光州生 活，不知不觉间已经做了三年的护士。同事 们称她是“倔强丫头”、“狠毒女”、“石 明熙’。六年前，她被诬告涉嫌主导民主化 学生运动，还被自己一向敬重的父亲逼迫退 学，于是她离开了家。护士金明熙为了筹集 去德国留学的费用，遇见了熙泰。在荒诞的 相遇中，明熙生平第一次感受到了一种解脱 感。这个人能让自己像孩子般开怀大笑，和 他在一起的自己好像重生成为了另一个人。



-李秀灿 / 李相二 饰 (贸易公司老板，秀莲的哥哥)
“法国留学派精英，继承家族商业的接班人”
外貌挺拔俊秀，性格温文尔雅。他认为“我 的女人，我来守护我来养”——是典型的旧 时代大男子主义类型。妹妹的高中同学明熙 一眨眼变成了妙龄少女，她一面补贴困难的家 境，一面努力不放弃留学的梦想，而秀灿渐 渐开始被这样的明熙所吸引。留学时期，因 来自弱小国家而被蔑视的秀灿，相比民主主 义，他更向往“有力量的国家”。但在五月 中旬，家乡发生了令人难以置信的事情，他 亲眼目睹自己珍视的人们，因为荒唐的理由 而遭受痛苦，然后秀灿终于承认自己的信念 是错误的，于是倾尽所有的财力和人脉，为 市民们筹调物资。

“全南大学法学院的圣女贞德”
作为世世代代 在光州地区叱咤风云的土豪家的独生女，虽 然在富裕的环境成长，但性格随和，生拉面 就着烧酒也不是问题。 兴许是因为对家庭富 裕抱有负债感，她对劳动运动和民主化运动 格外积极。父亲认为这样的秀莲很不懂事， 每次当她闯祸被关进拘留所时，父亲都会让 秀莲去相亲，以此作为保释金的补偿。当她 得知让明熙替自己前去相亲的对象，竟然是 自己特别喜欢的匿名大众歌曲作曲家“无名” 时，非常后悔自己做出了那样的决定。

ヒテの人生をひと 言で言い表すなら、“偏見との闘い”だ。未婚 の母の息子に対する偏見を打ち砕くために、 ソウル医科大に首席で入学。真面目だと思 われるのもイヤで、フォークギターを担いで 音楽喫茶に入り浸っていたが、人の見ていな いところでは死にもの狂いで勉強し、大学で はつねに成績トップだった。かといって意地 や根性だけの毒蛇のような性格ではない。む しろ、いけしゃあしゃあとした、予測不可能な 特有の図々しさで相手が戸惑うのを見て楽 しむマダラヘビに近い。それがヒテの生き延 びる術だった。



-キム・ミョンヒ / コ・ミンシ (３年目の看護師)
“白衣の天使より白衣の戦士に近い、正義感 あふれる看護師”

すらりと背が高く紳士 的な性格。自分の女は自分が守り、食べさせ ていくという典型的な昔の“男らしい”タイプ。 ただの妹の友達だった女子高生ミョンヒが いつの間にか大人の女性になり、苦しい家 計を支えながらも留学の夢を諦めない姿を 見て次第に惹かれていく。一方、留学生時代 に“弱小国の出身者”扱いをされていたスチ ャンは、民主主義よりも“力のある国”を求め ていた。しかし５月の中旬、信じられない出 来事が故郷で起こり、大切な人々がひどい 理由で苦しめられているのを目撃してようや く自分の信念が間違っていたと気付く。そして 財力と人脈すべてを駆使して市民に物資を 調達し始める。

代々、光 州地域を牛耳ってきた有力者の一人娘で、と ても裕福に育ったが、生のインスタント麺を 肴に焼酎を飲む豪快さがある。裕福さへの 後ろめたさのせいか、労働運動や民主化運 動には誰よりも積極的だ。そんな自分を世 間知らずな子供扱いする父親は、彼女が留 置場に連行されるような事件を起こすたび に、保釈金を払う代わりに見合いをさせる。 そんな見合いの場に自分の代わりにミョン ヒを送るスリョン。ところがその見合いの相 手が、自分の大好きな匿名の民衆歌謡(protest song)の作曲家“ムミョン”だという事実 を後になって知り、ミョンヒに見合いの身代 わりをさせたことを後悔する。
