<The Jingbirok : A memoir of Imjin War> is a historical series depicting the inside story of the Joseon dynasty and its court during the Japanese invasion of Korea from the battle of Imjin to the death of commander Lee Sun-shin at the battle of Noryang.

The series based on a war memoir called ‘Jingbirok’ written by Ryu Seong-ryong, one of the revolutionary leaders of the Joseon dynasty who fought hard to save his nation and its people. After experiencing seven years of the Japanese invasion, he compiled the practical national policies and the crisis management into a book to deliver a message about the importance of building powerful country to their descendants.

In delivering the vivid war scenes of the battle of Imjin, the sufferings of people and Ryu Seong-ryong’s struggle for the reformation in politics within the court of Joseon dynasty, this epic drama hopes to reflect on the wrongdoings of our history and to look for a wisdom and insight in preparation for the future crisis.

He is a scholar-official of the Joseon dynasty with a heart for practicality and realization of practice. During the time of Japanese invasion, he becomes the chief state councilor and later becomes the highest commander of military to take a full command of the royal court in the times of war and party struggles. Beneath his gentle and honest character, he is a man of charisma and is not swayed by the wishy-washy stance of his political party.

The fourteenth king of the Joseon dynasty. Having indirect ancestral roots, he is grappled with justifying his succession to the throne. 《惩毖录》是以柳成龙先生执笔的《惩毖录》内容为中心，展现并记载了从壬辰倭乱之前开始到李舜臣将军殉国的“露梁海战”期间，朝廷中发生的故事，是一部大河连续剧。

为了保卫国家保护百姓，朝鲜王朝官员柳成龙亲身经历了7年的壬辰倭乱后，执笔写了《惩毖录》。而这部电视剧正是改编自柳成龙的这本集国家危机管理、技术和实利、国政、哲学之大成，要早建立强盛国家，并向后世传达预防患乱教训的同名史书《惩毖录》。

作品以壬辰倭乱为背景，生动地展现了当时人们苦闷和伤痛、西厓柳成龙的改革意志、宣祖与朝廷大臣的政治分歧等。从中试图寻找智慧，从观察历史错误的“惩”中得到教训并且做到防患于未然的“毖”。

朝鲜第14代王，由于是庶出，对皇位继承过程有自卑感。
他对军事非常关心，决心平息党羽争斗。但是迎来壬辰倭乱危机，作为一国之王，他的资质和能力摆到了试验台。

「懲毖録（ジンビロク）」はリュ・ソンリョンが書いた｢懲毖録｣の内容をベースに壬辰倭乱が発生する前から李舜臣将軍が戦死した露梁(ノリャン）海戦まで朝廷で繰り広げられる話を描いた大河ドラマである。
｢懲毖録」は国と国民を守ろうとした革新リーダーのリュ・ソンリョンが７年に亙る壬辰倭乱を経験した後、国家の危機管理ノウハウと実利中心の国政哲学を集大成した同名の著書｢懲毖録」で、予め国を強くし兵乱に備えなければならないというメッセージを後世に訴えている内容である。
作品は壬辰倭乱の生々しい現場、その中で起るその時代の人々の苦悩と痛み、リュ・ソンリョンの改革意志、宣祖(ソンジョ)と朝廷大臣との政治的葛藤などを描き、歴史の過ちを懲らしめ(懲）、未来の危機に備える(毖)知恵と洞察力を求めようとする。

学者であり、実践と実現の結果をもっと重要視した政治家だった。
壬辰倭乱の時、領議政に上がって４道の都體察使(戦時の最高軍職)になり、党争と戦乱の中で朝鮮の朝廷を総指揮するようになる。穏やかで素直な品性の中にカリスマが隠されている。当色は東人(ドンイン)だが党利党略に束縛されない人物である。

宣祖(ソンジョ) cast キム・テウ
｢君らが僕をこうさせたからこの戦争も君らの責任じゃ｣
朝鮮の第14代の国王。傍系出身の王で、王位継勝のコンプレックスを持っている。
軍事に関心が高くて党争を巧みに治めようとしたが、壬辰倭乱という危機に陥り王としての資質がを問われることになる。
