  • This drama is a story about a reputable family who maintained being wealthy for 300 years and completed the wealth in the most beautiful way.

    The Choi family maintained their wealth for 300 years through 13 generations. There is unique teaching in the secret of maintaining the wealth: \'Do not collect fields yielding more than 10,000 seok of rice,\' \'Do not let people in the distance of 40,000 meters starve to death,\' \'Do not increase wealth in a lean year,\' \'Treat travelers well.\' Teachings like these are their unique philosophy to discipline their descendants.

    Choi Guk-seon (Cha In-pyo) is a man who became the basis of the Choi family\'s wealth for 300 years, through 13 generations. He was born as a son of the most reputable family in Gyeongju, but he comes to engage in business to save his waned family because of the war. Later, he goes to the capital, Hanyang, having a big ambition and works for the government. However, he gains enlightenment from many hardships and comes back to Gyeongju leaving behind everything he earned. Afterwards, he inquires into soil and agriculture and then makes a great contribution to agricultural development of the latter period of the Joseon Dynasty. At the last phase of his life, he returns all properties of the Choi family to the local society and accomplishes the Noblesse Oblige.

    Han Dan-yi (Han Go-eun) is a daughter of a ruined noble family as well as a mental and practical soul mate of Choi Guk-seon. Disguised as a servant\'s daughter, she tries to find a shelter in Gyeogju and happens to meet Guk-seon. Later, she works as a tough female leader of a commercial organization located in Hanyang and teaches the basic of commercial trade to Guk-seon who comes to Hanyang. Unfortunately, her destiny does not allow her to have a normal love, but only secret one with Guk-seon.

    Kim Won-il (Kim Seong-min) is a son of Kim Ja-chun who is the supervisor (a kind of steward) of the Choi family. He has an inferiority complex that he is a son of a supervisor. He makes ill use of the position and takes inappropriate self-interest, and he makes Choi Jin-lip, the grandfather of Choi Guk-seok, gets angry and is kicked out of the family. Afterwards, he buys an official post and turns into a noble. Thanks to his father, Kim Won-il also can take an official post through a test and successfully enters into the central politics.
    While Choi Guk-seon makes efforts to rebuild his family, he hinders him every time. Kim Won-il ends up being Choi Guk-seon\'s rival during his lifetime and a rival in love for Dan-yi at the same time.

    崔国先（车仁表 饰），庆州崔家相传十三代三百年之久的家产奠基人。他虽是出生于庆州最大名门富族的少爷，但为挽救因战争之乱开始败落的家门，投身于商业经营。之后，怀揣远大的理想和包袱进首都汉阳做官，但经历的种种困苦让他大彻大悟，毅然放弃汉阳城里的一切，回到庆州。回到家乡之后，他埋身于土地和农业，为朝鲜后期农业发展做出了巨大的贡献。到了晚年，他把庆州崔氏家的全部财产捐献给社会，完美地实践了人生美德。

    韩丹伊（韩高恩 饰），出生于没落家庭的女儿，即是崔国先的精神支柱，也是实质意义上的人生伴侣。小时因战争，扮成家奴相男之女而躲难到庆州，与国先不期而遇。后在汉阳当商团的头，以机智果断地投入商业活动，并教会国先经营商业的基本之道。她一生与国先有缘无份，是个让人心生怜爱的人物。

    金元一（金成民 饰），崔氏家的管家金子春的儿子。管家之子的身份是让他心中难以解开的一个结。金子春利用自己的地位中饱私囊，后被崔国先的爷爷崔震立赶出家门。此后，金子春用钱买官进入两班阶层，其子金元一也借父亲的光考取功名，成功进入权力的中心之地。为东山再起挽救败落家门的崔国先，越是拼命努力就越受到元一的阻挠。他即是崔国先一生的对手，也是互争丹伊的情敌。

    慶州（ギョンジュ）のチェ家、13代300余年にわたって大金持ちの家柄を維持してきた名家。300年間にわたって富を維持することができたのはこの家門だけの独特の教えがあったのである。
    ‘財産は一万石（一石は80ｋｇ）以上集めるな’、‘四方白里（一里は0.39ｋｍ）以内に飢え死にする人がいないようにしろ’、‘凶年には財産を増やすな’、‘過客を手厚く持て成す事’などその家門だけの独特の経営哲学で子孫を厳しく訓育させた結果である。
    チェ・グクソン： 慶州のチェ家、13代300年にわたった富の基礎になった人物である。チェ・グクソンは慶州の最高の名門家の御曹司に生まれたが戦争によって衰えた家門を生かすために商業に跳びこむようになる。それから大きい意を抱いて首都の漢陽に上京して官職に勤めるが、様々な苦労のあげく悟りを得てから全てのものを捨てて慶州に戻ってくる。以後土地と農業に執着して朝鮮後期の農業発展に至大な影響を及ぼすことになる。 晩年には慶州のチェ一家のすべての財産を社会に還元してノーブレスオブリージュ（高い地位や身分に伴う義務。ヨーロッパの社会で、貴族など高い身分の者にはそれに相応した重い責任・義務があるという考え方）を完成する。
    ハンダン： 沒落した両班家の娘でチェ・グクソンの精神的な支えと同時に実質的なパートナーである。家の召使いの娘と成りすまして慶州へ避難して来てグクソンに出会うことになる。その後、漢陽でしっかり者の行首（商人•芸者などの親分）として漢陽にやってきたグクソンに商業の基礎を教えるようになる。グクソンとは一生続けることができない縁で切ない愛を分かち合う。
    キム・ウォンイル： チェ家の小作管理人（執事）のキム・ジャチュンの息子である。執事の息子というコンプレックスが強い。キム・ジャチュンはその地位を利用して私利私欲を満たそうとしてチェ・グクソンのお爺さんであるチェ・ジンリプの怒りを買って追い出されることになる。以後、キム・ジャチュンはお金で官職を買って両班になってそのおかげでキム・ウォンイルも試験を受けて官職を得ることになる。
    彼は沒落した家門の子孫であるチェ・グクソンが再起しようと苦労するたびその道を妨げる。チェ・グクソンの一生のライバルであると同時にハンダンを挟んで 恋敵関係になる。
